It is now exactly a year since fire ripped through Betty’s Bay destroying 41 houses and damaging countless others. The village is still in recovery and there are still remnants of buildings not yet attended to. The landscape is also in recovery but it will take many years for the trees and fynbos to regenerate. A disaster though has the ability of pulling people together and our little village was certainly no exception. People put aside their personalities to lend themselves to the common cause, in the face of a terrible time people were at their best.
To commemorate the fire and honour all those who lived through it a book “Fire Storm / Vlammehel” has just been published detailing stories of those involved and with outstanding pictures of the fire aftermath. Available in many outlets in Betty’s Bay at R250 it is a must have reminder of what Betty’s Bay endured last year.
