The damage to the R44 between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els over Heritage weekend (end September 2023) due to the ‘once in a 200 year storm’ was so severe that the road was closed up until just before Christmas. It opened with six ‘stop and go’ points in place which on the average day only increases the travelling time by about 10 minutes. The WC Roads Agency has confirmed that the road will have to be closed at some point to complete the renovations that can’t be managed with one lane open and that they are hoping that all repairs will be completed by April 2024. It is prudent though, if you are planning to travel this road that you check in advance as to whether it is operational.
